The heroine and the evocative atmosphere left so much to be desired. One more facet that loomed above the narrative is Thornfield Hall, the abode of Edward Fairfax Rochester. Thornfield Hall, as is characteristic of Gothic literature, is a sweeping structure filled with several rooms, some occupied, some not. One of the denizens of this multi-roomed house is Bertha Antoinetta Mason, the first wife of Rochester. But who is this enigmatic woman and what story does she have in store? The narrative commenced in the Coulibri Estate, a sugar plantation in the Dominica. Coulibri lost its former glory and the family plunged into inevitable poverty. Mason, however, was no gentleman. Wide Sargasso SeaWhile vivid, I didn't by Rochester's voice. There is barely a hint of the austere personality in his voice, though it displayed in his actions.

Plus Wide Sargasso Sea his wife's voice did not differ significantly from his, even though they are both massively different people in both personality and action. I personally found that discombobulating. Antoinette was born into a formerly prosperous family on a Caribbean island.

It seemed to have magic in it in some way. Upon finishing it, I find I didn't really understand what was going on. I think it will be one of the very rare books that I read again. Not that it was good, or that it was so beautifully written, but that it has really burrowed its way into my mind. A precious gem of a book, Wide Sargasso Sea written, makes Wide Sargasso Sea reader pay attention to every syllable to get the full meaning of what is going on.
I was intrigued by the concept behind this book--Jane Eyre is Saargasso of my all-time favorite novels. However, I really could not get past the trippy dream-sequence writing style.

It was annoying to read. I get what the author was trying to accomplish here, but it wasn't really to my personal taste.

Spanning across the Caribbean to England, it is a vibrant, sensual novel about how people can be turned against each other. I found Wide Sargasso Sea through a post on a blog about prequels and sequels to classics. It answered a lot of the questions I had after reading Jane Eyre and filled in a lot of blanks I hadn't even known existed! All this and I haven't even Sarfasso how well written it was and how thought provoking it was.]
