Updated: Apr 30, While most expat websites and blogs are busy focusing on Panama, Ecuador and Costa Rica as the top places for would-be expats to consider moving to, what is not being said is that as more and more foreigners retire in these countries the cost of living and the price of desirable real estate has continued to climb until at some point, unless you were one of the fortunate early arrivals, the financial benefits of living outside the United States or Canada is greatly diminished. Mexico, which has the highest number of expats of any Latin American country, was bought up years ago and Costa Rica is not far behind. Fortunately for bargain hunters, there still remain several Latin American countries that have gone almost completely unnoticed in expat circles. Only recently has Nicaragua begun to attract more attention with its still inexpensive and undeveloped Pacific real estate, as has Belize on a much smaller scale. El Salvador also seems to receive very little publicity. That leaves Honduras, where my family and I live. As most people will quickly point out, Costa Rica and Panama, do have the much deserved reputation as being very safe countries in which to live and invest in, while Honduras…not so much.
